Vilsandi Rescue Station was built under the lighthouse in 1874 because the lowlands and reefs near the Island of Vilsandi were the areas that had the most shipwrecks in the coastal sea of the island of Saaremaa. This is the only wooden boathouse belonging to a sea rescue station in Estonia that has preserved in its original location, it was restored in 2012.
