The Nõmme-Mustamäe landscape protection area is located in the city of Tallinn, in Nõmme and Mustamäe districts. The protected area was formed in 2004 and its area is 199.9 ha. The surface of the protected area has been shaped by the icecap, water, and winds over the past 12,000 years. The last advancement of the icecap created the steep Mustamäe slope nearly 30 metres high, which marks the position of the edge of the icecap at that time. After the sea retreated, streams changed the slope's appearance, and in the extensive delta area of the glacier river, Nõmme and Männiku sands were formed. Under the high slope, springs open. The varied landscape has developed diverse forest communities with species-rich biota that are unique in urban conditions. The protected area includes the Rahumäe special area of conservation, which is part of the Natura 2000 network. The conservation objective of the Rahumäe special area of conservation is the conservation of the sand pink habitats.
