Restoration of mires

Protecting biotic communities in mires aims to preserve their natural state (characteristic composition and functioning) and the ecosystem services that depend on them. For this, the priority is to ensure the natural hydrological regime of the mires. The protection of mires also includes the restoration of the natural character of damaged mires. Ecological restoration has become an important activity worldwide to halt or at least slow biodiversity loss and save ecosystem services from decline. Ecological restoration assists in returning ecosystems destroyed or damaged by humans to a state as close to nature as possible, enabling the restored ecosystem to function independently in the future.

The Estonian Fund for Nature has implemented several mire restoration projects. With their help, a series of nine educational films titled ‘Ah soo!’ has been produced to playfully introduce different facets of mire.
