Semi-natural grasslands are grasslands that have traditionally been used as pastures or haylands. Semi-natural grasslands play an important role in the conservation of biodiversity in the open landscape, as they provide habitat and feeding for many rare species of fungi, animals, and plants and help to preserve the biodiversity of agricultural land and the diversity of the landscape.
The most common semi-natural grassland in Estonia are alvars, grasslands on mineral soil, flooded meadows, wet meadows, wooded meadows, wooded pastures, and coastal meadows.
Does your land include a semi-natural grassland? You can view it in the map application of the Land Board or the map view of the protected areas website.
Read more about the restoration and maintenance of semi-natural grasslands from the website of the Estonian Environmental Board and about grants from the website of ARIB.
