Visitation opportunities

3 hiking trails have been prepared in the nature reserve: Selli-Sillaotsa study trail of 4.7 km running in the Laeva swamp, Kirna hiking trail of 6.8 km running along the flooded meadow of Pedja River, and Põltsamaa-Kärevere waterway of 75 km on the Põltsamaa, Pedja and Emajõgi Rivers.

Selli-Sillaotsa study trail

  • Start: on the Laeva-Palupõhja road in Selli, finish on the Laeva–Palupõhja road in Sillaotsa
  • Length (duration): 4.7 km (2 hours)
  • Key words: Selli-Rehesaare winter road, oligo-mesotrophic boreal pine forest, mesotrophic swamp, bog islands
  • There are resting places and parking lots (in Selli and Sillaotsa) and Suuretüki observation tower on the hiking trail
  • Trail is managed by: the State Forest Management Centre

Kirna study trail

Attention! The trail cannot be passed during high waters.

  • Start and finish: Kirna
  • Length (duration): 6.8 km (3 hours)
  • Key words: the Pedja River, flooded meadows and floodplain forests, Musutamm (Oaktree of kisses), suspension bridge
  • The trail includes Altmetsa observation tower with a campfire place and the Pedja River campfire place with the possibility to set up a tent.

Põltsamaa (Kamari) – Kärevere waterway

The waterway is mostly meant for camping using water crafts without engines. The trip may be started in the Põltsamaa City or in Kamari.

  • Start: Põltsamaa
  • Finish: Kärevere
  • Length (duration): 75 km (2–3 days)
  • Key words: the Põltsamaa, Pedja and Emajõgi Rivers, flooded meadows, floodplain forests, oxbow lakes, ruins of Rõika glass factory, old raft place of Reku and farmsteads
  • The waterway has 2 places to make stops: on the banks of the Pedja River in Naela and Rasti, both have campfire places, table and chairs, base for sleeping, trash can and latrine.
