Endla Nature Center is located in Jõgeva County village named Tooma. It is 21 km from Jõgeva, 70 km from Tartu and 131 km from Tallinn. Regardless of the direction of travel, you must follow the Piibe highway (road 13 from Tallinn and 39 from Tartu). Turn away to the gravel road if you see the bus stop named Tooma, also a brown sign “Endla looduskaitseala 1,5 km” directs you where to turn. The gravel road runs 1,5 km through village and ends with parking area close to nature center. The same parking area is a good place where to park your car if you want to go hiking.
Adhere to the restrictions in effect in the protection area. You can acquaint yourself with them by reading the protection rules (in Estonian).
Orjaku study trail
The trail consists of the longer Orjaku trail (2 km) and the shorter Roostikuring (Reed loop) (0.7 km). The trail is designated with poles and direction indicators. In addition to the information boards and boardwalk, there are two observation towers that are accessible with a baby carriage as well as with a wheelchair. A view of Käina Bay becomes visible when standing on the platform.
Käina Bay – Kassari Landscape Protection Area offers several opportunities for vacationing and enjoying the nature. Kassari Island that is connected to the island of Hiiumaa with two road dams has historically been known as a summer holiday area. Activities can be done throughout the year in the protection area. The Orjaku study trail that is suitable even for the youngest nature lovers offers opportunities for interesting trips throughout the year.
The mud of Käina Bay was placed under state protection in 1939. Käina Bay was placed under protection as an ornithological restricted area and Kassari Island as a restricted landscape area in 1961. The unified Käina Bay – Kassari Landscape Protection Area was founded in 1998.
The landscape protection area can be conditionally divided into two parts: the island of Kassari and Käina Bay.
Kassari Island
Landscapes that are directly connected to human activity are a big value for the island of Kassari. As a result of the collaboration between human and nature, valuable semi-natural communities have formed: meadowlands, wooded and coastal meadows.
- The medicinal mud from Käina Bay that has the best quality in Estonia was placed under protection already in 1939. Käina Bay was placed under protection as an ornithological restricted area with a local importance and Kassari island as a restricted landscape area in 1961. The Käina Bay Wild Bird State Reserve was founded on the basis of the ornithological restriction area in 1971. Reigi Island in the bay of Jausa was also a part of the reserve.
The beaver web camera is once more online and this year it is installed on the shore of the Penijõgi in Matsalu National Park.
Behind the beaver lodge the largest reed field at the Baltics is visible and you can hear the sounds of the birds and perhaps even the sound of the golden jackal.
