Businesses operating in protected areas and their area of influence come into direct contact with visitors and help introduce Estonia's natural values and cultural heritage. More and more, visitors prefer companies that adhere to the principles of sustainable nature tourism.

Anna Regina Kabral, manager of Altmõisa guest house, explained that as a small guesthouse next to Matsalu, they understand that sustainability is vitally important for business. "By focusing on sustainable practices, we ensure not only adherence to our ethical values, but also long-term viability in an increasingly environmentally conscious market. Preserving species richness helps keep local ecosystems healthy, attracting Matsallu eco-tourists and nature enthusiasts looking for authentic experiences. In addition, focusing on sustainability reduces daily costs, supports local farmers, provides employment for surrounding families and improves the guest experience," said Kabral.

EUROPARC Federation has drawn up the principles of sustainable tourism, the aim of which is to promote high-quality and sustainable tourism in protected areas and their nearby areas. Destinations and companies awarded the quality label by the EUROPARC form a pan-European community that helps to maintain and promote high-quality and sustainable tourism.

In Estonia, the quality mark of sustainable nature tourism destination has been awarded to Matsalu, Lahemaa and Soomaa national parks. In these regions, 19 service providers have now received the quality label of entrepreneur. In Europe, more than 220 tourism companies have received the sustainable tourism certificate, most of them mainly from Southern Europe.

More information about sustainable tourism can be found on the website of protected areas.

The next round for entrepreneurs will be announced in September 2024.
